Surfyy Beach in Yangyang is known for its clear water and a atmosphere that feels a long way from the rest of Korea. You can take a surfing lesson, or sit with a drink at one of the beach cafés and do nothing at all. There are good places to eat and plenty of spots worth photographing. You do not need to get in the water to enjoy it.

For nearly forty years, nobody could get onto this beach at all. The northern stretch of the east coast was a restricted military zone: wire fencing along the sand, floodlights at night. The stretch where the parasols now stand was empty until then.

Why is this beach different?

Yangyang did not become Korea’s surfing centre by accident. The waves along this coast are consistent and the depth changes gently, which suits people who are still learning. Through the 2010s, surf shops gathered around Jukdo Beach, and this stretch opened on the back of that.

So it was never designed as a swimming beach. It was built as a surfing beach from the start — seating, shade, showers and toilets laid out along the sand, so that people who never touch a board can still spend a full day here.

A high proportion of visitors come from abroad, which means signage and service are available in English. Among Korean beaches, that is unusual.

What will you do here?

Mostly sit. The seating area is large and shaded, and watching the sea is the default way to use this place.

Cafés and bars run the length of the sand, and on summer weekend evenings the music carries on late. If you are after a quiet stretch of time, that is the one window to avoid.

Surfing lessons are available, though realistically that is an option for whoever is travelling with you rather than for you, if you are recovering.

How far will you walk?

Only a few minutes from the car park to the sand. There is a stretch of soft sand to cross, so if putting weight through your feet is difficult at the moment, stay on the boardwalk and in the seating area.

When should you go?

September and October. The water is still warm and the crowds have thinned out considerably. The east coast gets a lot of clear skies in those months.

July and August weekends are a different beach entirely — busy, and loud until late. If you want quiet, come midweek.

In short: Surfyy Beach in summer and Surfyy Beach in early autumn are two different experiences, and if you want the quiet one, come on a weekday after the peak season ends.

There is no train, so most people arrive by bus or car. Yangyang International Airport is close by, but it serves a limited number of routes — in practice, most visitors come from Seoul.

If you are recovering

There is only so much shade on a beach. If you have been told to stay out of the sun, keep to the parasols in the seating area and avoid the middle of the day. Sand and sea air can irritate a treated area, so if anything has not fully closed, stay out of the water and check with your clinic first.

And if the point is simply to look at the sea, there is no reason to come in high summer. A weekday outside peak season gives you the same view with far fewer people in it.

FAQ

Do I have to surf? Not at all. More people come to walk the sand and sit with the atmosphere than to get in the water.

Is there a charge? Seating and parasols are paid. Rates vary by season, so check on the day.

Will English get me by? Better here than at most Korean beaches, though not in every business.

Surfyy Beach is the place to come when you want to sit somewhere that does not feel like anywhere else in Korea and take your time about it. Come when the crowds are gone, and the beach gives you a great deal more of itself.
